DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Senior Ashley Brown (New Bedford, Mass.) notched a double-double effort of 14 points, 11 rebounds, nine assists and five steals to lead UMass Dartmouth to a 61-49 non-league college women’s basketball victory over Regis Wednesday evening at the Tripp Athletic Center.
The host Corsairs (2-0) scored 13 of the game’s first 15 points to take a 17-8 first quarter lead, as UMass Dartmouth held the visiting Pride (0-3) to a 25 percent shooting performance in the opening half to take a 35-17 advantage at the break. The hosts maintained a 17-point edge heading into the final frame before Regis used a 15-6 run over a seven minute stretch to creep back to within eight (57-49) on sophomore Arie Searcy’s (Santa Rosa, Calif.) lay-in with 2:33 remaining. Those would prove to be the Pride’s final points of the night, however, as Corsair senior Kayla McMahon (Hanover, Mass.) converted a free throw and iced UMass Dartmouth’s triumph with a three-pointer with 47 seconds to play that accounted for the final margin.
McMahon finished with 13 points, five rebounds and four blocks in the win for the Corsairs, who received 11 points, nine boards and three blocks from junior Lauren Empey (Middleboro, Mass.). Sophomore Shaelyn Carreiro (Fall River, Mass.) and freshman Jennifer Driscoll (Westport, Mass.) each had eight points and combined for nine caroms for UMass Dartmouth, which shot 37 percent (21-56) from the field and held an 18-3 scoring edge from behind the arc on the evening. The hosts dished out 15 assists on 21 made field goals to claim their fifth win in as many meetings between the two schools.
Senior Katryna Veasey (Quincy, Mass.) recorded a double-double performance of 15 points and 10 rebounds in the setback for Regis, which received 11 points and nine boards from Searcy to go with seven points, seven caroms and four assists from junior Nikki Bitinaitis (Cromwell, Conn.). The Pride shot 30 percent (20-68) from the floor overall, but connected on just one of 11 attempts from three point range.
