First Half Offensive Fireworks Leads Field Hockey To 3-1 Victory Over Clark

DARTMOUTH, Mass. --  Junior Desarai Melendez (Brockton, Mass.) netted a pair of goals to lead UMass Dartmouth to a 3-1 non-league college field hockey victory over Clark Tuesday evening at Cressy Field.

Melendez staked the host Corsairs (2-4) to a 1-0 lead just 9:54 into the contest on a feed in front from sophomore Kylie Dias (Fall River, Mass.), and junior Brittany Perry (North Dighton, Mass.) doubled that margin 1:57 into the second stanza after converting a cross from freshman Mya Amaral (Rehoboth, Mass.).  Melendez collected her second of the night on a pass from sophomore Hannah Niemi (Fairhaven, Mass.) with 1:29 remaining in the half to close out UMass Dartmouth’s scoring, and that margin held up until the waning moments of the match when junior Carden Maloney (Worcester, Mass.) converted a penalty stroke with 14 seconds to play for the visiting Cougars (6-3) to account for the final.

Junior Katelyn Banalewicz (Fall River, Mass.) came within those final ticks of recording her first collegiate shutout and made eight saves to pick up the win in goal for the Corsairs, while sophomore Grace Sawyer (Windham, Maine) made a pair of stops in the setback for Clark, which saw its five-match winning streak come to an end.  The Cougars outshot UMass Dartmouth by a 14-7 margin overall (9-5 on goal) and held a 4-3 edge in penalty corners for the contest.

UMass Dartmouth hosts Castleton in a Little East Conference match on Saturday morning at Cressy Field beginning at 11:00 am, while Clark entertains Wheaton in a New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference outing on Saturday afternoon in Worcester, Mass. that begins at 1:30 pm.
