Field Hockey Flies Past Fitchburg State For Second Straight Shutout

FITCHBURG, Mass. --  Goals by juniors Hannah Steen (Fall River, Mass.) and Brittany Perry (Dighton, Mass.) backed fellow junior Katelyn Banalewicz’s (Fall River, Mass.) third shutout of the season, as UMass Dartmouth notched a 2-0 Little East Conference field hockey victory over Fitchburg State Saturday afternoon at Elliot Field.

Steen gave the visiting Corsairs (6-8, 4-5 LEC) the only goal they would need with 62 seconds remaining in the opening half with a penalty stroke conversion, and Perry took a pass from sophomore Kylie Dias (Fall River, Mass.) with 53 seconds to play in the third quarter to provide an insurance marker that accounted for the final score.  Banalewicz took care of the rest by making a pair of saves to record her second straight and third clean sheet of the fall for UMass Dartmouth, which held a 19-4 advantage in total shots (16-2 on goal) and a 10-3 edge in penalty corners for the contest.

Freshman Colleen Lamprey (Cherry Valley, Mass.) made 14 saves in the setback for the host Falcons (2-13, 1-8 LEC), as the Corsairs moved a half game ahead of Eastern Connecticut for the final conference playoff spot.

UMass Dartmouth heads to Bridgewater, Mass. on Wednesday afternoon to take on Bridgewater State in a Little East Conference clash beginning at 3:30 pm, while Fitchburg State hosts Southern Maine in a Little East outing on Wednesday evening at Elliot Field that begins at 7:00 pm.
