Field Hockey Drops Tough 2-1 Non-League Decision At Salve Regina

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. --  Senior Ashley Cody’s (Pawling, N.Y.) goal with 1:57 remaining in the third quarter held up as the game-winner and lifted Salve Regina to a 2-1 non-league college field hockey victory over UMass Dartmouth Thursday evening at Gaudet Field.

After the teams played a scoreless opening half, the host Seahawks (3-1) got on the board in the 33rd minute of play when sophomore Hannah Bedrosian (Seekonk, Mass.) converted a pass from senior Olivia St. Jean (Goffstown, N.H.), but the visiting Corsairs (0-2) evened matters just 2:15 later on senior Elliana Stormwind’s (Littleton, Mass.) first goal of the season.  Cody struck for the deciding tally eight minutes later for Salve Regina, and freshman Casey Febus (Souderton, Fla.) made that stand up with a five-save performance in the hosts’ cage.

Junior Katelyn Banalewicz (Fall River, Mass.) recorded nine stops in net in the setback for UMass Dartmouth, as the Seahawks outshot the Corsairs by a 24-8 margin overall (11-6 on goal) while holding a 10-4 edge in penalty corners for the contest.

UMass Dartmouth heads to Worcester, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to take on Worcester State in its Little East Conference opener beginning at Noon, while Salve Regina hosts Dean in a non-league match on Saturday afternoon at Gaudet Field that also begins at Noon.
