Softball Blanked Twice at Salve Regina

NEWPORT, RI-Jen Cruver limited the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's softball team to eight hits and host Salve Regina swept a doubleheader from the Corsairs, 5-0 and 8-0 in five innings, at Toppa Field Thursday.

In the opener, Cruver pitched a four-hit shutout and the Hawks broke the game open with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Freshman right hander Shannon Orton (Swansea, MA/Case HS) went all the way and took the loss for the Corsairs, who committed four errors and yielded three unearned runs,

In the nightcap, Cruver again held UMass Dartmouth to four hits, while SRU scored seven times in their first two at bats to seize a commanding lead. Orton and freshman pitcher/first baseman Amanda McHugh (North Kingstown, RI/North Kingstown HS) had a hit in each game for the Corsairs, and sophomore right hander Becky Williams (North Kingstown, RI/Chariho HS) started the second game and took the loss.

UMass Dartmouth fell to 8-8, while Salve Regina improved to 11-7. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Plymouth State in their Little East Conference opener Saturday. The Seahawks will host Roger Williams next Wednesday.
