Softball Sweeps Western Connecticut

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA – Freshman pitcher Shannon Orton (Swansea, MA/Case) allowed only one run and three hits over two complete games as the UMass Dartmouth softball team swept visiting Western Connecticut State University in a Little East Conference doubleheader at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Sunday afternoon. The Corsairs (11-21, 4-7 LEC) took game one in walk-off fashion, 2-1, before capturing the second game 2-0. The wins were Orton's fourth and fifth of the season, respectively.\

The sweep marked the first time UMass Dartmouth has ever swept a doubleheader from Western Connecticut in Little East Conference regular season play.

Orton was sharp all day, consistently pounding the strike zone in racking up four strikeouts in game one and three K's in game two. The first-year hurler allowed a single walk in each game.

Sophomore infielder Samantha Gregoire (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth) had the decisive blow in the opener for UMD, lacing a game-winning single up the middle that plated freshman outfielder Rachel Carey (Holbrook, MA/Cardinal Spellman) and senior catcher Breanna Marcyoniak (Westfield, MA/Westfield). Sophomore outfielder Olivia Kenyon (Canton, MA/Canton HS) went 2-for-2 with a double in the first game for the home squad.

Erin Weber (Rocky Hill, CT/Rocky Hill) picked up the lone hit for the Colonials (16-18, 6-4 LEC) in game one with a single to center field in the fifth inning. Alexandra Sabith (Meriden, CT/Maloney) took the loss for WCSU, evening her record at 7-7. Sabith pitched well in her own right, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out five and walking two.

UMass Dartmouth wasted little time getting on the board in the nightcap, when junior shortstop Emily Pontes (Tewksbury, MA/Essex Agricultural Tech) stole second after beating out an infield single and scored when the outfielder backing up the bag threw the ball out of play. The run made the score 1-0 after one inning of play.

The Corsairs added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Gregoire smashed an RBI triple to right-center that drove in freshman outfielder Shannon Droney (Franklin, MA/Franklin).

Pontes led UMD at the plate in game two, as she went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Droneywent 1-for-2 with a triple.

Julia Bocek (Southington, CT/Southington HS) picked up both hits for Western Connecticut, going 2-for-3 in the finale. Stephanie Moss (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) took the loss in the pitcher's circle for WCSU, dropping her record to 4-4. Moss allowed one earned run on five hits in 5 1/3 innings of work. She struck out six and walked none.

The Corsairs will return to action when they visit conference foe Rhode Island College Wednesday. The Colonials will host Trinity Tuesday in a non-conference match up.
