Softball Falls To Kean, Husson At PFX Spring Games

KISSIMMEE, Fla. --  The UMass Dartmouth softball team fell to 6-4 on its 12-game visit to the PFX Spring Games on Friday afternoon, as the Corsairs dropped a 10-2 five inning decision to Kean in the opener before falling by an 8-6 margin to Husson in the nightcap in games played at Fortune Field.

Sophomore Kylie Fletcher (Dighton, Mass.) continued her torrid pace at the plate in the opener for UMass Dartmouth, as she rapped out a pair of hits and drove in a run in a fifth inning RBI single.  Junior Cierra Sheerin (Bridgewater, Mass.) accounted for the Corsairs’ other tally in the lid-lifter with a run-scoring single, as Kean (14-1) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in its first at-bat before scoring two runs over the final three frames to post its triumph.  Sophomore Jill Richards (Kingston, Mass.) suffered the setback inside the circle in the opener for UMass Dartmouth to even her mark at 1-1 on the spring.

The Corsairs grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second of the nightcap on sophomore Leah Major’s (Fairhaven, Mass.) RBI single, and after Husson (8-4) evened matters in the top of the third, Major’s two-run double in the fourth gave UMass Dartmouth a 3-1 cushion.  The Eagles collected six hits and took advantage of three errors to stage a six-run fifth inning rally and take a 7-3 edge, but the Corsairs responded by tallying twice in the bottom of the frame on Richards’ sacrifice fly and an error.

Husson tacked on a run in the six to extend its lead to three, and UMass Dartmouth brought the tying run to the plate in its final at-bat after Sheerin’s RBI single closed the gap back to two, but the Corsairs could get no closer.  Major and freshman Averi Soares (New Bedford, Mass.) each had two of nine nightcap hits in the setback for UMass Dartmouth, as Richards allowed just three earned runs and struck out four over five innings of work inside the circle.

The Corsairs close out their visit to the Sunshine State on Saturday morning by taking on Montclair State and Rutgers-Newark at the PFX Spring Games beginning at 10:30 am.
