KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Junior Cierra Sheerin (Bridgewater, Mass.) rapped out a pair of hits and drove in two runs to lead UMass Dartmouth to a 5-1 non-league victory over Rutgers-Newark in the final game of the 2019 PFX Softball Spring Games Saturday afternoon at Fortune Field.
Sheerin gave the Corsairs (7-5) all of the runs they would need in the top of the third after lacing a two-run double and scoring on a throwing error, and after the Scarlet Raiders (1-2) got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, UMass Dartmouth took advantage of a pair of errors in the fifth and sixth innings to plate two more tallies and account for the final score.
Sophomore Kylie Fletcher (Dighton, Mass.) also collected two hits in the triumph for the Corsairs, who received a single off the bat of sophomore Leah Major (Fairhaven, Mass.). Freshman Anna Kerwood (Florence, Mass.) allowed two hits and an unearned run over the first four innings to pick up her third win in four decisions for UMass Dartmouth, while sophomore Jill Richards (Kingston, Mass.) tossed three innings of one-hit ball and added a single at the plate to earn her first save of the spring.
The Corsairs, who opened the day with a 6-4 setback to Montclair State, begin their Northern slate on Wednesday afternoon by heading to Norton, Mass. to take on Wheaton in a non-league doubleheader at 3:30 pm.
