NORTON, Mass. -- Senior Shelbi Wilson (Peabody, Mass.) and freshman Sarah Pritchard (Malta, N.Y.) combined on a pair of three-hit complete-game performances inside the circle to lift Wheaton to a sweep of a non-league college softball doubleheader from UMass Dartmouth Wednesday afternoon at Clark Field. The host Lyons (10-4) triumphed by a 9-1 six inning final in the opener before prevailing by a 6-1 margin in the nightcap.
Wheaton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first contest before the visiting Corsairs (7-7) sliced their deficit in half on an RBI double off the bat of freshman Averi Soares (New Bedford, Mass.), but the Lyons used a grand slam from senior Emily Schlapak (Dover, N.H.) in the bottom of the fifth to break things open. Schlapak added a double and finished with six RBI in the lid-lifter for the hosts, as Wilson struck out four and helped her own cause with two hits at the plate to improve to 5-3 on the season.
Freshman Lindsay Chubbuck (Berkley, Mass.) joined Soares in rapping out a double in the opening setback for UMass Dartmouth, which also received a single from fellow freshman Madison Reichert (Floral Park, N.Y.). Sophomore Jill Richards (Kingston, Mass.) recorded a pair of strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings of work inside the circle for the visitors.
Wheaton again took a 2-0 second inning advantage in the nightcap before the Corsairs got on the board in the top of the third when freshman MaKinna Van Horn (Marysville, Wash.) scored on an error, but the Lyons plated a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth frames on a pair of errors and a solo homer off the bat of sophomore Lindsay Whittles (Hopkinton, Mass.). Senior Jade Assad (Lambertville, N.J.) also homered in the second outing in support of Pritchard, who improved to 5-0 on the spring.
Junior Nicole McSweeney (Bridgewater, Mass.) rapped out two hits in the nightcap setback for UMass Dartmouth, which also received a single off the bat of junior Cierra Sheerin (Bridgewater, Mass.). Junior Kate McDonald (Scituate, Mass.) allowed one earned run over four innings of work inside the circle for the Corsairs.
