Women's Tennis Defeats Southern Maine, 8-1

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team defeated visiting Southern Maine, 8-1 , in a Little East Conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Saturday. The match was moved indoors to the Dartmouth Tennis Center because of inclement weather.

The Corsairs took two of the three doubles matches. For UMD,  juniors Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth HS) and Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) defeated freshman Courtney Aldrich (Lewiston, ME/Lewiston HS) and sophomore Molly Morrill (Litchfield, ME/Oak Hill HS) at number two doubles, 8-2; and sophomore Hannah Schulze (Chelmsford, MA/ Chelmsford HS) and senior Liz Girczyc (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) downed juniors Monique Giroux (Merrimack, NH/Monadnock Regional HS) and Christina Savage (Caribou, ME/Caribou HS) at number three, 8-3. At number one doubles, juniors Mary Moran (Windham, ME/Portland HS) and Emily Boutin (Old Town, ME) of the Huskies defeated  juniors Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, MA/Case HS) and Elizabeth Cignoli (Springfield, MA/Cathedral HS), 8-5.

UMass Dartmouth won all six singles matches in straight sets, with Pelletier coming from behind to defeat Moran at number one singles, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-3).Junior Casey Auman (North Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS), who did not play doubles, downed Savage at number six, 6-1, 6-2.

"We played a very steady, crafty game today," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. :Our doubles were pretty much in sync. Southern Maine's first doubles team was very good, and we played well against them. The most exciting match of the day was at first singles, where Nicole Pelletier came from behind in the first set to win the tie-breaker. We played well in all six singles matches."

The Corsairs improved to 8-0 and 5-0 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while USM dropped to 6-4 and 2-3 in LEC play with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit  Bridgewater State Tuesday.  Southern Maine will host Colby-Sawyer Wednesday.
