Women's Tennis Shines at SRU Spring Tournament

NEWPORT, R.I. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's tennis team turned in a solid effort in its non-traditional spring season event last Saturday. The Corsairs competed with Clark University, Johnson & Wales University and host Salve Regina University in the first ever Hard Court Triples Tournament on the Seahawk campus courts. The "triples" came in the form of three players from each school entered in three different flights to have a round-robin matchup with each of the other three schools. Each player had to play doubles twice (both with a different teammate as partner) and singles once.

UMass Dartmouth missed out on capturing any of the Triples flight trophies for finishing on top of the group, but won the most total games of the four schools.

"It was a solid effort," said UMD Head Coach Doug Chapman, who was guiding the Corsairs for the first time in competition. "We won five of eight singles matches, topped two of the flights and only missed out on the third by one game because Clark needed an extra game in tie-breaker."

UMass Dartmouth had a pair of wins during singles play in Triple A as Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, MA/Case) and Hannah Schulze (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford) both captured their matches. Elizabeth Cignoli (Springfield, MA/Cathedral) came up just short of a sweep in her singles match.

The Corsairs' Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth) pitched a shutout and Alison Furtado (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven) was credited with an 8-0 win in their Triple B singles matches.

In Triples C, senior Liz Girczyc (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) gave UMD an 8-4 singles victory. Corsair freshman Bridget Avallone (Cumberland, RI.) saved six match points before dropping an 8-5 singles decision in Triples C.

Doubles were a different story for the Corsairs, who won only three of eight doubles matches on the day.

UMD dropped all three matches in Triple A doubles, but earned a pair of victories in Triple B doubles with Furtado and Pollard taking an 8-2 decision and Furtado teaming with Alex Post (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth North) for an 8-5 victory. Furtado finished 3-0 in the competition.

UMD's victory in Triples C doubles was a 9-8 (7-3 tiebreaker) win for Girczyc and Lindsay Butler (Newport, RI).

"Liz Girczyc was our only senior competing, and she won her matches in both singles and doubles," said Chapman. "It was nice to see her finish her college playing career with a pair of victories."

The Corsairs won 42 games in doubles, compared to the 54 that they accumulated in singles.

"We introduced some new things in doubles during our non-traditional spring season," said Chapman. "I saw bits and pieces of it coming together, and it provides us a base to build upon next fall. We will improve in doubles. Generally speaking, I was encouraged by what I saw in the Salve tournament."
