MILTON, Mass. -- Juniors Rachel Aftandilian (Watertown, Mass.) and Jordan Martin (Taunton, Mass.) each posted wins in singles and doubles action to lead UMass Dartmouth to a 7-2 non-league college women’s tennis dual-match victory over Curry Tuesday afternoon on the Scott Courts.
Aftandilian, Martin, senior Melanie Wong (Somerset, Mass.) and sophomore Jackie Bokis (Spencer, Mass.) notched straight set triumphs at the last four singles spots in the lineup for the visiting Corsairs (2-0), as senior Jaime Fastino (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Aftandilian teamed up for an 8-6 victory at the top doubles position. Martin and fellow junior Michelle Aftandilian (Watertown, Mass.) also claimed an 8-6 win at number two doubles for UMass Dartmouth, which received a default point at number three doubles to close out its scoring.
Freshman Sophia Wiernusz (Collegeville, Pa.) and junior Alison Daigle (Edgartown, Mass.) registered the lone wins of the afternoon at the top two singles spots in the setback for the host Colonels (0-5), as each won 10-point pro set tiebreakers to account for the final margin.
UMass Dartmouth hosts Lesley in a non-league outing on Thursday afternoon on the UMD Courts beginning at 3:30 pm, while Curry heads to Newport, R.I. on Saturday afternoon for a Commonwealth Coast Conference clash with Salve Regina that begins at Noon.
