Women's Tennis Notches 5-4 Season Opening Victory At Saint Joseph (Conn.)

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. --  A three-set victory by junior Jordan Martin (Taunton, Mass.) at the number six singles spot gave UMass Dartmouth a 5-4 non-league triumph over Saint Joseph (Conn.) in a college women’s tennis dual-match played Thursday afternoon at Hall High School.

After taking two of the three doubles contests, the visiting Corsairs (1-0) received singles wins at the top two spots from senior Jaime Fastino (Rehoboth, Mass.) and junior Michelle Aftandilian (Watertown, Mass.), but the host Blue Jays (1-1) picked up victories from senior Domonique Carnot (Meriden, Conn.), sophomore Carolyn Callahan (Southington, Conn.) and freshman Emily Kerr (Portland, Conn.) to even matters heading into the final match.  After Martin took the opening set by a 6-3 margin, Saint Joseph freshman Marie Emerson (Killingworth, Conn.) claimed a 7-5 second set triumph to force a deciding set that Martin won on her 16th match point by a 6-2 final.

Fastino and junior Rachel Aftandilian (Watertown, Mass.) picked up an 8-7 (6-4 in the tiebreak) win at the top doubles spot for UMass Dartmouth, which received an 8-1 victory at the number three position from the tandem of senior Natasha Shiku (North Grafton, Mass.) and junior Hana Hershey (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro).  Callahan and Emerson teamed up for the Blue Jays’ lone doubles win (8-5) at the number two spot.

UMass Dartmouth travels to Danbury, Conn. on Saturday afternoon to take on Western Connecticut in its Little East Conference opener beginning at 1:00 pm, while Saint Joseph travels to Quincy, Mass. to square off with Eastern Nazarene in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference dual match that also begins at 1:00 pm.
