BOSTON, Mass. -- Freshman Shelby Parent (Cambridge, Minn.) provided the deciding point with a three-set win at number six singles that lifted UMass Boston to a 5-4 Little East Conference women’s tennis dual-match victory over UMass Dartmouth Saturday afternoon on the Boston College High School Courts.
After the host Beacons (10-1, 5-1 LEC) won two of the three doubles outings, the visiting Corsairs (7-6, 3-4 LEC) received straight set singles triumphs from freshman Lauren Morgart (Weston, Mass.) and senior Melanie Wong (Somerset, Mass.) and a come-from-behind three set victory at number two singles from senior Jaime Fastino (Rehoboth, Mass.). Freshman Evangelia Vassiladis (Weymouth, Mass.) and sophomore Meaghan Moriarty (Norton, Mass.) countered with wins at the third and fourth singles positions for UMass Boston to set up the deciding match between Parent and UMass Dartmouth sophomore Jackie Bokis (Spencer, Mass.), as the two split sets before Parent posted a 6-0 third set triumph to cap the four-and-a-half hour marathon contest.
Parent and senior Valeria Tueme (Bonney Lake, Wash.) teamed up for an 8-5 win at number two doubles for the Beacons, who received an 8-4 victory from Vassiliadis and sophomore Chloe Gates (Plymouth, Mass.) at the third doubles spot. Morgart and Fastino picked up the Corsairs’ doubles triumph with an 8-6 win at the number one position.
