DANBURY, Conn. -- Three different players posted wins in both singles and doubles play to lead Western Connecticut to a 5-4 Little East Conference women’s tennis dual-match victory over UMass Dartmouth Sunday afternoon on the Westside Courts.
Senior Emma Chapman (Danbury, Conn.) and graduate student Carole Allers (Wilton, Conn.) notched straight set wins at the top two spots for the host Colonials (1-1, 1-0 LEC), and the duo teamed up for an 8-2 triumph at number one doubles. Freshman Sarah Silva (Brookfield, Conn.) also won in straight sets at number five singles and teamed up for an 8-5 victory with senior Pooja Dudhedia (Brookfield, Conn.) at the number three doubles spot for Western Connecticut.
Juniors Rachel Aftandilian (Watertown, Conn.) and Jordan Martin (Taunton, Mass.) collected straight set wins at the number three and six singles positions in the setback for the visiting Corsairs (3-1, 0-1 LEC), while senior Melanie Wong (Somerset, Mass.) overcame a first set setback to win a three-set decision at the number four singles spot. Martin and junior Michelle Aftandilian (Watertown, Mass.) combined for an 8-0 triumph at number two doubles to account for UMass Dartmouth’s other point of the day.
UMass Dartmouth heads to Worcester, Mass. on Tuesday afternoon to take on Clark in a non-league dual-match beginning at 4:00 pm, while Western Connecticut travels to Madison, N.J. tomorrow afternoon for a non-league dual-match with FDU-Florham that also begins at 4:00 pm.
