Rivier, Westfield State Best Volleyball in Tri-Match

NASHUA, N.H. – UMass Dartmouth squared off with quality competition on Saturday, meeting Rivier and Westfield State for a tri-match hosted by the Raiders, dropping by 3-0 and 3-1 scores, respectively.

How it Happened

UMass Dartmouth took the first set of the day away from Westfield State, playing the Owls closely throughout before the 16-1 Raiders doubled up the Corsairs around the stat sheet in the final match of the afternoon. 

Westfield State 3, UMass Dartmouth 1

UMass Dartmouth battled to four sets with the Owls, taking the day's opener by a 25-20 score. The difference in the set was the serve game, as the Corsairs collected five service aces. Westfield State then reversed the tides in Set Two, winning 25-20 despite UMass Dartmouth's 12 kills. The Owls cruised in the third set, 25-13, before narrowly outdoing the Corsairs by a 25-23 score in the fifth. 

Freshman Anita Sengara (Vancouver, B.C.) tabulated a match-high 13 kills to go along with a team-high four aces. She also added 21 digs, just six shy of classmate Jillian Sykora's (Waterford, Conn.) 27. Senior Christina Spinazola (Medway, Mass.) generated a match-high 31 assists.

The Raiders notched 32 kills on the match, with three players reaching 11 kills each to help reach a team hitting percentage of .293. Rivier's Dana Mott achieved a remarkable .636 percentage, tallying eight kills on 11 attempts in the match as her squad picked up 25-12, 25-18 and 25-13 wins. 

Sengara and sophomore Olivia Wallett (Willington, Conn.) both gathered six kills apiece on the match, fueled by Jordan Rittberger's (Huntington, N.Y.) 12 assists. Defensively, Sykora chipped in 18 digs and classmate Nicole Silverman (Chelmsford, Mass.) added seven.

Inside the Numbers

  • Rivier registered the highest attack percentage for a UMass Dartmouth opponent so far this season at .293.
  •  The Corsairs tied a season-high with 83 digs in the four-set affair with Westfield State.
  • With 21 digs against Westfield State, Sengara reached a new career-high, bettering the 18 she registered against Lasell on Sept. 10.
  • Spinazola inches closer to the 2,000-career assist mark, needing just 44 more to reach the milestone.
