Volleyball Drops Tri-Match Decision In Little East Opener At Southern Maine

GORHAM, Maine --  The UMass Dartmouth volleyball team suffered its first setbacks of the young season on Saturday afternoon, as the Corsairs dropped a tri-match decision to host Southern Maine (3-0) and Maine Maritime (3-1) in contests played at Hill Gymnasium.

Senior Amanda LaCroix (East Freetown, Mass.) notched nine kills and eight digs as UMass Dartmouth (5-2, 0-1 LEC) dropped an opening 25-18, 25-21, 25-15 Little East Conference decision to the host Huskies (6-4, 1-0 LEC), while fellow senior Kristy Walton (Fairhaven, Mass.) added nine kills as well for the Corsairs.  Junior Nicole Silverman (Chelmsford, Mass.) chipped in with seven kills and 12 digs for the visitors, who received four kills from junior Samantha Sedano (Valley Glen, Calif.) and a combined 28 set assists from junior Jordan Rittberger (Huntington, N.Y.) and sophomore Riley Thomas (Fairhaven, Mass.).  Freshman Charleen Lamagna (Pembroke, Mass.) collected nine digs for UMass Dartmouth, which received six digs from junior Jillian Sykora (Waterford, Conn.).

Junior Alexa Cacacie (Manahawkin, N.J.) registered 15 kills for Maine Maritime (6-5) in the nightcap, as the Mariners rallied after dropping a 26-24 opening set decision to take the next three sets by finals of 25-17, 25-13 and 25-17.  Fellow junior Avery O’Neal (Burbank, Calif.) added 13 kills and six digs for Maine Maritime, which received 34 set assists from junior Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) along with 13 digs from junior Maria Perez (San Juan, P.R.).

Silverman posted nine kills and 10 digs in the second match setback for the Corsairs, who received six kills from Sedano along with five kills and three digs from freshman Molly Porch (New Hartford, Conn.).  Rittberger added 24 set assists for UMass Dartmouth, which received four kills from Walton and 15 digs from Sykora.

UMass Dartmouth hosts Simmons in a non-league match on Tuesday evening at the Tripp Athletic Center beginning at 6:00 pm, while Southern Maine heads to Bangor, Maine on Wednesday evening for a non-league outing with Husson that begins at 7:00 pm.  Maine Maritime will be idle until next Saturday, September 22nd when the Mariners travel to Throggs Neck, N.Y. to take on SUNY-Maritime in opening round play of the Ninth Annual Maritime Classic beginning at 11:00 am.
