Volleyball Drops Tri-Match Decision To Southern Maine, Smith

DARTMOUTH, Mass. --  Sophomore Kacey Foerster (Scarborough, Maine) registered 26 kills, 27 digs and seven service aces to lead Southern Maine to a sweep of a college volleyball tri-match played Saturday afternoon at UMass Dartmouth’s Tripp Athletic Center.  The Huskies took an opening 3-1 Little East Conference triumph over the host Corsairs before rallying for a 3-2 non-league middle match win over Smith, which ended the day by posting a 3-1 non-conference victory over UMass Dartmouth.

Foerster notched a double-double effort of 12 kills, 13 digs and two service aces in Southern Maine’s (12-10, 3-2 LEC) 25-23, 22-25, 26-24, 25-16 opening Little East victory, as the Huskies also received 10 kills, nine digs, 13 set assists and four block assists from sophomore Sophie Lindsay (Pasadena, Calif.).  Freshman Joie Hared (South Salem, N.Y.) chipped in with nine kills for Southern Maine, which received 14 set assists from freshman Cassidy Gibb (Lee, N.H.) and a combined 25 digs from juniors Lauren Delissio (Hebron, Conn.) and Rachel Chille (Yarmouth, Maine).

Senior Nicole Silverman (Chelmsford, Mass.) posted a double-double performance of 11 kills, 14 digs and two service aces in the opening setback for the host Corsairs (6-12, 1-3 LEC), who received 11 kills and four digs from sophomore Emma Aillet (Deer Park, Tex.) along with nine kills and three digs from sophomore Mallory Singer (Succasunna, N.J.).  Junior Alivia Connors (Derry, N.H.) added six kills for UMass Dartmouth, which received 22 set assists from senior Jordan Rittberger (Huntington, N.Y.) along with eight set assists each and a combined seven digs from junior Riley Thomas (Fairhaven, Mass.) and freshman Courtney Carreiro (Dartmouth, Mass.).  Senior Jillian Sykora (Waterford, Conn.) collected 27 digs for the hosts, who received 10 digs from senior Meghan Mullinax (Lake Balboa, Calif.).

Foerster recorded another double-double effort of 14 kills, 14 digs and five service aces in Southern Maine’s come-from-behind 3-2 middle match victory over Smith (4-16), as the Huskies rallied for a 25-23, 21-25, 15-25, 25-20, 15-11 triumph.  Lindsay added 12 kills, eight digs, 24 set assists and a pair of aces for Southern Maine, which received five kills each and a combined 10 digs from the tandem of sophomore Molly Mawhinney (South Portland, Maine) and junior Jamie Jannarone (Windham, Maine).  Delissio chipped in with 20 digs for the winners, who received 14 digs from senior Megan Gettings (Bristol, Conn.).

Junior Caleigh Johnson (Georgetown, Tex.) registered 14 kills in the middle match setback for Smith, which received nine kills each and a combined eight digs from junior Claire Cicchetti (Menlo Park, Calif.) and freshman Ava Zollinger (Orlando, Fla.).  Freshman Gabby Beckman (Aurora, Colo.) added eight kills and 17 digs for the Pioneers, who received seven kills, 14 digs and four service aces from junior Amy Hagen (Owings, Md.).  Freshman Evi Evgeniou (Thessaloniki, Greece) collected 41 set assists, 11 digs and a trio of service aces for Smith, which received 21 digs from senior Jody Huang (Cranston, R.I.).

Johnson notched 11 kills in the nightcap triumph for Smith, which dropped the opening set 25-23 before rallying to take the next three by finals of 27-25, 25-23 and 25-19.  Cicchetti added 11 kills and four service aces for the Pioneers, who received 10 kills and two service aces from Zollinger along with seven kills and 19 digs from Beckman.  Evgeniou registered 38 set assists and eight digs for Smith, which received 29 digs from Huang.

Silverman recorded her second double-double of the day with 13 kills, 14 digs and a pair of service aces in the nightcap setback for UMass Dartmouth, which received 12 kills each and a combined four digs from Aillet and Singer.  Rittberger added 17 set assists and nine digs for the Corsairs, who received 12 set assists and 11 digs from Thomas.  Sykora chipped in with 20 digs and five set assists for the hosts, who received 12 digs from Mullinax.

UMass Dartmouth heads to Providence, R.I. on Wednesday evening to take on Rhode Island College in a Little East Conference match beginning at 7:00 pm, while Southern Maine travels to Boston for a Little East clash with UMass Boston that also begins at 7:00 pm.  Smith hosts Emerson in a New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference outing on Tuesday evening in Northampton, Mass. beginning at 7:00 pm.
