Women's Tennis Takes Down Western Connecticut

DANBURY, CT- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team didn't lose a set in blanking host Western Connecticut State , 9-0, in a Little East Conference match at the Westside Tennis Courts Saturday.

In doubles, juniors Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth HS) and Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) defeated Caitlin Ogrizovich and Angelica Jara at number two, 8-2, sophomore Hannah Schulze (Chelmsford, MA/ Chelmsford HS) and senior Liz Girczyc (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) downed Valerie Scaglione and Emily Brooks at number three, 8-0, and juniors Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, MA/Case HS) and Elizabeth Cignoli (Springfield, MA/Cathedral HS) downed Alyssa Panasci and Bastienne Bernardeau, 8-1.

The closest singles match of the day was at number five, where Cignoli defeated Jara in a tie-breaker after splitting the first two sets, 4-6, 6-4, (7-5).

"It was a nice win for us against a young Western Connecticut team," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. "We all played hard today, we played extremely well, and it was a good solid win."

The Corsairs improved to 9-0 and 6-0 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while WCSU dropped to 1-6 and 0-5 in LEC play with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit the other undefeated team in the conference, Bridgewater State, on Monday.
