Athletic trainers are health care professionals who specialize in preventing, recognizing, managing and rehabilitating injuries that result from physical activity. The athletic trainer works under the direction of a licensed physician to comprise the Sports Medicine Department. As part of a complete health care team, the sports medicine staff works in conjunction with other health care professionals, athletics administrators, coaches and parents to provide personalized, comprehensive, and effective health care that focuses on the student-athlete.
The services delivered can be broken down into three primary categories: injury prevention, management of athletic injuries, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. These three categories are combined to ensure that the student-athlete's return to competition is done in a thorough, timely, and most importantly, safe manner.
The underlying philosophy for this department is that the medical needs of the student-athlete will always be the first consideration for all members of our staff. Staff members will help to create an atmosphere that is dedicated to the health and safety of every one of our student athletes, in accordance with the responsible practices of sports medicine profession. The sports medicine staff members will conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times, following the standards and practices of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Athletic Training Room, the institution, and the National Athletic Trainers Association.
We are committed to the ongoing evaluation of the sports medicine department and its protocols so that our student athletes can be assured of the the highest quality of medical care available.
