Women's Tennis Takes Down UMass Boston, 9-0

BOSTON, MA- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team won every match in straight sets en route to a 9-0 victory over host UMass Boston in a Little East Conference match at the Boston College High School Tennis Courts Saturday.

For UMD, juniors Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, MA/Case HS) and Elizabeth Cignoli (Springfield, MA/Cathedral HS) ,senior Liz Girczyc (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS),  sophomore Hannah Schulze (Chelmsford, MA/ Chelmsford HS) and juniors Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth HS) and Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) were all double winners.

Pelletier and Cignoli defeated Hieu Nguyen and Samantha Counts at number one doubles, 8-2. Pelletier downed Nguyen at number one singles, 6-1, 6-0, while Cignoli defeated Stephony Reeves at number five, 6-0, 6-0. Pollard and Furtado defeated Wendy Steinman and Imani Williams at number two doubles, 8-0. Pollard downed Steinman at number three singles, 6-2, 6-0, while Furtado defeated Williams at number four, 6-2, 6-3. Schulze teamed with senior Liz Girczyc (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) to defeat Reeves and Solveig Castelli at number three doubles, 8-2, and defeated Counts at number two singles, 6-3, 6-0.

"We played well, and we came out strong from the get go," said UMass Dartmouth Assistant Coach Amy Lopes. "We came away from doubles 3-0, then we were aggressive in singles and finished up strong."

The Corsairs improved to 6-0 and 3-0 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while UMB dropped to 2-5 and 0-3 in LEC play with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Worcester State Wednesday.  UMass Boston will visit Western Connecticut State Wednesday.
