Bears Best Corsairs, 7-2

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – University of Massachusetts Dartmouth captured the top-two singles matches, but Bridgewater State University proved too strong as the Bears earned a 7-2 Little East Conference victory this afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

Bridgewater State (6-1) remained unbeaten in the conference circuit at 4-0, while UMass Dartmouth (3-5) slipped to 1-3.

Junior Maggie LeBrun (Mattapoisett, Mass. / Tabor Academy) earned her first win of the season at No. 1 singles, defeating Hayley Perron (Plympton, Mass.) in straight sets.  She captured the opening set 6-3 before clinching the victory with a 7-3 decision in the tie-breaker.

Freshman Kerry Magoon (Marshfield, Mass.) need the maximum three sets to secure the second win for the visitors.  Magoon cruised to the first set with a 6-2 victory, but Vautrin responded by winning six of the next seven games to force the decisive set.  Unfazed, Magoon edged her opponent in the super tie-breaker to capture her third singles win of the season.

The Bears raced out to a commanding lead, sweeping the three doubles matches by identical scores of 8-4.  Bridgewater State continued to ride its momentum into singles play, winning flights three through six in straight sets.

UMass Dartmouth will return to at 4 p.m. on Oct. 10, when the Corsairs travel to St. Joseph (Conn.) for a non-conference contest.
