Corsair Women's Tennis Rises to 3-1 with Win Over Salem State

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – UMass Dartmouth swept all six singles matches, upping its win streak to two by cruising to an 8-1 win over Salem State in Little East Conference action Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened

The Corsairs debuted three new doubles teams and successfully captured two of the three pairings. Juniors Mollie McCaffrey (Tauton, Mass.) and Kerry Magoon (Marshfield, Mass.) narrowly fell at No. 1 doubles, while junior Kheyla Orival (Woburn, Mass.) and senior Jillian Reichert (Marion, Mass.) claimed the third pair 8-2. Sophomore Jenna Lahaie (Lakeville, Mass.) and freshman Jaime Fastino (Rehoboth, Mass.) took the second pairing 8-1.

The Corsairs easily captured the match in the singles portion. Fastino and junior Samantha Rollings (Tiverton, R.I.) secured victories at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, both at 6-4, 6-2 margins. In number one singles, Lahaie battled back to win her second set 6-4 after falling 1-6 in the opener, and then clinched a 10-1 third set to take her match.

McCaffrey and Magoon were the first to finish their competitions, with Magoon clinching the match by blanking her Viking opponent in the first set to take the overall win to the tune of 6-0, 6-2. McCaffrey continued her success at No. 3, winning with a pair of 6-1 sets.

Inside the Numbers                                            

  • The Corsairs have now won four of the last six meetings against Salem State.
  • Fastino's winning streak at the No. 4 singles slot continues, as she is now 4-0 overall at her flight. She also holds a 3-1 record at No. 2 doubles.
  • McCaffrey is also unbeaten at singles, sitting at 4-0 at No. 3 and 3-1 in doubles after splitting time between the No. 1 and No. 2 flights.
  • UMass Dartmouth is 2-0 in LEC play for the first time since 2012, when the Corsairs went 10-2 overall.
