Anchorwomen's Late Run Spoils Senior Day

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Rhode Island College first-year Maddie Kross (Peachtree, Ga.) snapped a 10-all tie with 5:50 remaining in regulation and the Anchorwomen added a pair of insurance goals to post a 13-10 victory over University of Massachusetts Dartmouth this afternoon at Cressy Field.

Rhode Island College improved its overall record to 2-6, while the Corsairs completed the 2021 campaign with a mark of 0-8.

UMass Dartmouth junior Bella Mancini (Bellingham, Mass.) led the hosts with a season-high six points, including five markers, and six draw controls, while sophomore Beatriz Tavares (New Bedford, Mass.) netted a pair of goals.  Senior Emma DeLacy (New Bedford, Mass.), junior Kara McLaughlin (Hanover, Mass.), and first-year Melanny Sanchez Alvarez (Stamford, Conn.) each found the back of the net. First-year Widline Thomas (Stamford, Conn.) and Sanchez Alvarez each collected a team-best six ground balls.

Kross powered the Anchorwomen with four markers and an assist for five points, while sophomore Emily Marino (Cheshire, Conn.) tallied two goals and three helpers for five points.  Junior Amara Gibau (North Providence, R.I.) added a hat trick and a team-high four draw controls.

Rhode Island College opened the scoring at the 1:15 mark of the contest, but Mancini responded with a pair of goals within 23 seconds to give the Corsairs a 2-1 lead. Junior Olivia Carpenito (Wilmington, Mass.) helped the Anchorwomen regain their advantage with her lone marker of the match and then set up Marino's man-down tally.  Both teams traded markers over the next nine minutes before McLaughlin gave UMass Dartmouth a 6-5 lead on her first goal of the season.  Rhode Island College finished strong down the stretch with a three-goal surge to carry an 8-6 advantage into the intermission.

The Corsairs cracked the scoring column less than a minute into the second stanza, when DeLacy finished a feed from Mancini.  The Anchorwomen extended their lead back to two goals, but UMass Dartmouth matched the mini run with consecutive scores from Mancini and Sanchez Alvarez to even the contest at 9.  Kross put the visitors back on top, but Mancini forged the eighth and final tie at the 8:15 mark.

Sophomore Shannon O'Connell (Narragansett, R.I.) reached double digits in saves with 11 to backstop the Anchorwomen to the win, while first-year Tahilia Amaral (Acushnet, Mass.) was credited with six stops.

UMass Dartmouth held an advantage in shots (28-21), draw controls (14-11), and ground balls (37-33), while the Corsairs forced 34 turnovers and the hosts committed 31.
