Box Score SALEM, Mass. – Powered by an all-around effort from the entire lineup, the UMass Dartmouth women's tennis team posted a 9-0 victory over Salem State University in Little East Conference action on Wednesday afternoon. The win moves the Corsairs to 6-6 overall and a 3-4 record in conference play, while the Vikings are now 0-11 with a 0-6 LEC mark.
The victory also saw the Corsairs clinch a spot in the upcoming LEC Tournament, which begins next week. UMass Dartmouth hosts the regular season finale on Saturday against Southern Maine at 11am.
Doubles action opened with an 8-0 victory as senior
Caroline Lemieux and sophomore
Zuri Walters bested Salem State junior Erin Curristin and rookie Alanna Zaldivar. From the top flight, the senior captain duo of
IsaBella Winter and
Ailey Riddick were 8-2 victors over Vikings junior Miah Reyes and sophomore Kenzie McLaren.
Second doubles rounded out the action as Corsairs rookie
Maddie Gonzalez and sophomore
Bailey Clarke recorded an 8-4 win over senior Samantha Tenney and rookie Ryann Tripp.
In singles action it was a 1-6 finish in the order as Winter got things going with a straight 6-0, 6-0 win over Tenney at one. Two saw Gonzalez post a 6-1, 6-2 win over McLaren for the match-clinching point, while three was a 6-0, 6-1 win for Walters over Reyes.
At four, Riddick posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory against Tripp, while five was a 6-2, 6-4 win for Clarke against Curristin. Rounding out the action was rookie
Cristina Avila, who posted her first collegiate victory with a 7-5, 6-2 win against Zaldivar.
The Corsairs are right back in action on Thursday, hosting Suffolk University in a 3pm match at the UMass Dartmouth Courts. UMassD then welcomes Southern Maine on Saturday at 11am, which will also be Senior Day, in addition to the Game of the Week.
