Maddie Wright, the UMass Dartmouth women's lacrosse team defeated Wentworth, 20-2 in Boston on Saturday. The Corsairs advance to 2-2 while the Leopards fall to 0-3.
The Corsairs got things going quickly in the opening quarter of action as Wright and sophomore
Widline Thomas scored three times in the first 5:30 of the contest. Wentworth's sophomore Jenny Montville responded with one of their two goals on the day. Following that, the Corsairs took off on a 15-goal run headed by Wright, Thomas, and junior
Melanny Sanchez Alvarez. With an 18-1 lead going into the final quarter, the Corsairs cruised to victory by a final of 21-2.
Highlighting the attack for UMD was Wright, who set a program-record with 11 goals on 13 shots and five assists. She also grabbed two ground balls and six draw controls. Wright reached goal number 23 of the season in just four games. Sanchez Alvarez added six goals of her own along with five assists. Thomas netted her second hat trick of the season in the win. Payton Conceicao, was brilliant in the net for UMD, she stopped 11 shots and allowed just two scores for the Leopards.
Wentworth struggled offensively in the contest, with their two goals coming from Montville and senior Helen Hamblett. Hamblett also won three draw controls and caused two turnovers.
UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Wednesday when they host Fitchburg State. Opening faceoff is set for 7:00.
