BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – Backed by a game-high six goals from junior
Melanny Sanchez Alvarez, the UMass Dartmouth women's lacrosse team posted a 12-8 victory over Massachusetts Maritime Academy in non-conference action on Friday. The Corsairs move to 4-2 while the Buccaneers are now 2-5.
The Corsairs opened the game's scoring in fine fashion as junior
Melanny Sanchez Alvarez dropped in back-to-back scores in the opening three minutes. Mass. Maritime answered soon after as Cassie Llewellyn scored a pair of her own to tie the game with 11:28 to play in the opening quarter.
Rookie
Maddie Wright – the Division III leader in points and goals per game, continued her outstanding effort with two straight tallies to open up a 4-2 lead, but the Buccaneers responded as Grace Calvert fired one in to make it a one-goal game with 6:19 remaining.
UMD took back the momentum with two straight from Sanchez Alvarez as the Corsairs took a 6-3 lead after the opening quarter.
In the second frame, Llewellyn found the back of the net once more for Mass. Maritime, but three straight, including two more from Sanchez Alvarez saw the Corsairs take a 9-4 lead into halftime.

Widline Thomas, followed by two in a row by the Buccaneers to cut the home team's deficit to 10-6. Despite that surge, the Corsairs continued to answer as rookie
Alannah Paiva scored to close out the third.
In the fourth quarter, Llewellyn once again scored to pull her team back to within four, but Thomas answered on the other end and the visitors held on for the victory.
Sanchez Alvarez finished with a game-high six goals with an assist, adding four ground balls, three caused turnovers and five draw controls. Wright had two tallies, a helper, two ground balls and a game-high eight draw controls, while Thomas posted two goals with three assists, adding a ground ball, three caused turnovers and two draws.
The Buccaneers saw Llewellyn post five goals with an assist, adding a game-high six ground balls and five caused turnovers with two draw controls. Calvert had two goals with three ground balls, three caused turnovers and three draws, while Allie Dickinson had two assists.

Payton Conceicao earned the victory with seven stops on the night, while Mass. Maritime's Sue Bird had seven saves in the loss.
The Corsairs return to action on Tuesday, traveling to Regis College for a 5pm contest.
