Corsairs Slip in Their First Little East Conference Matchup

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – UMass Dartmouth women's lacrosse team jumped ahead 2-1 over Plymouth State to start the contest. But it was the Panthers who surged passed the Corsairs as they finished on top, 18-7 on Saturday. The Panthers advance to 5-3 on the season and are now 1-1 in Little East action, while the Corsairs slip to 5-3 themselves, and drop their first game of conference play.

UMass Dartmouth's first year standout Maddie Wright opened the game with two quick goals to put UMD up 2-1 at the 10:46 mark of the opening quarter. Plymouth State responded with eight straight scores, with three of them coming from senior Emily Santom. The eight-goal run carried into the second quarter, as the Panthers led 9-2 with 10 minutes to go before the half.

PSU extended their lead in the second and third quarters, out-scoring the Corsairs 9-2 in those periods. The two scored for UMass Dartmouth came from Wright and junior Widline Thomas. After going into the final frame trailing 16-4, UMD won the fourth quarter by a score of 3-2. Wright notched her fourth goal of the contest in that stretch. Freshman Alannah Paiva scored her sixth of the season, and junior Melanny Sanchez Alvarez netted her first and only of the game with 2:30 left on the clock. The Corsairs were unable to make up the deficit, and fell 18-7 to Plymouth State.

Leading the way statistically for the Corsairs was Wright with four goals on seven shots, five ground balls and three ground controls. Sanchez Alvarez scored once and caused three turnovers while snagging three ground balls. Thomas also scored once and grabbed three ground balls. In the net, senior Payton Conceicao stopped 12 on-target shots.

The Panthers were led by sophomore Maddie Hunt with four goals, six ground balls, and four caused turnovers. Santom scored three of her own, and the Panthers saw two-goal performances from sophomore Julia Donovan, junior Megan Gaspa, and freshman Camryn Loomis. PSU saw a game-high seven assists from senior Olivia Croke. Sophomore Margie Black earned the win in net for the Panthers, stopping four shots in 45 minutes of action.

UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Rhode Island College. The contest is scheduled for a 12:00 PM start.
