Corsairs Post Dominate 21-2 Win Over Wentworth

Six players score to lead UMass Dartmouth Past Leopards

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Six different players scored, including a game-high six from rookie Maddy Allen as the UMass Dartmouth women's lacrosse team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology by a 21-2 margin on Saturday afternoon. The Corsairs move to 4-2 on the season, while the Leopards fall to 0-3.

It was a quick start for the Corsairs as Allen – a midfielder – fired one in just two minutes into the frame. Senior captain and middie Melanny Sanchez Alvarez found the back of the net at 8:39 and again at 4:48 to push the margin to 3-0, as a tally from senior midfielder and captain Widline Thomas opened a four-goal spread with 3:59 remaining.

UMass Dartmouth closed out the frame with three more goals, including two from Allen sandwiched between a Sanchez Alvarez tally for the 7-0 lead after the opening 15 minutes.

In the second stanza, the Leopards got on the board as junior midfielder and captain Shayleah Gunning-Lavoie fired one in off a feed from classmate and attack Kaitlyn Kozack in the opening minute.

Despite the momentum, the Corsairs kicked it back into high gear as a 7-0 run to close out the quarter gave the home team a 14-1 margin at halftime. During the run, Allen fired in two goals, while rookie midfielder Lily Nees added a pair. Thomas and senior attack Hannah Mitus also had scores.

In the third quarter, the Leopards got their second score as junior attack Kaitlyn Kozak bested sophomore goalie Kelsie Couto for Wentworth's second tally. UMass Dartmouth countered with five more tallies, two off the stick of Thomas, for the 19-2 advantage.

The Corsairs dropped in two more goals in the final frame, including the first of the season from senior attack Ruby Sanger, to conclude the scoring.

Allen led the way, adding an assist with three ground balls, two caused turnovers and four draw controls. Sanchez Alvarez dropped in five goals with a helper, posting six ground balls and three caused turnovers with a game-high 10 draw controls. Thomas added five goals with three assists, while Mitus had a goal with two assists. In goal, Couto recorded one save for the victory.
