Corsairs Fall to Panthers in LEC Regular Season Finale

UMass Dartmouth shoulders tough loss to Plymouth State

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Powered by goals from eight different scorers, Plymouth State University topped UMass Dartmouth in Little East women's lacrosse action on Friday evening. The Panthers move to 10-6 overall and 5-2 in the conference, while the Corsairs slip to 9-7 and 2-5 in the LEC.

The Panthers got the scoring going in the first quarter, opening an 8-0 margin in the first 11 minutes of the game. UMass Dartmouth stopped the run with 2:05 remaining as rookie attack Jennifer Lins connected off a feed from senior captain and midfielder Melanny Sanchez Alvarez.

The Corsairs added another tally less than a minute later as Lins sent a feed to rookie midfielder Maddy Allen to make it an 8-2 score after the opening 15 minutes of action.

Sanchez Alvarez added another tally in the second quarter, but the Corsairs went into the halftime trailing by a 12-3 margin.

In the third quarter, both Sanchez Alvarez and Allen scored to close the gap to 14-5 with 5:45 to go. Despite another score from Sanchez Alvarez in the fourth, the Corsairs couldn't hold off the Panthers, who scored three to close out the game.

PSU's Julia Donovan recorded five goals with three assists, adding five ground balls with two caused turnovers. Amelia Thomas notched four goals with three assists, while Jenna Stowell tacked on a goal with five assists and a game-high seven draw controls. In goal, Margie Black earned the win with eight saves.

For the Corsairs, Sanchez Alvarez had three goals with two assists, adding two ground balls, a caused turnover and six assists.Allen had two goals and five draw controls, while Lins had a goal and an assist. In net, sophomore Kelsie Couto posted 10 saves. 

The Panthers have secured a spot in the upcoming playoffs, while the Corsairs wait for the completion of the regular season to see if they have secured a spot.
