Women's Lacrosse Falls to Bates in Road Action

Corsairs fall to Bobcats despite five points from junior captain Maddy Allen

LEWISTON, Maine – Bates College utilized a strong offensive effort in the opening quarter to defeat UMass Dartmouth in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon on Garcelon Field. The Bobcats move to 3-4 overall with the 20-7 victory, while the Corsairs are now 3-3 on the season.

The homestanding Bobcats opened the game's scoring, but the Corsairs battled back as rookie midfielder Carleigh Swenson and junior midfielder and captain Maddy Allen each scored within 40 seconds of one another to give the visitors a 2-1 lead at 12:36.

It was a lead that proved short lived as the Bobcats fired off eight straight goals to close out the first period for a 9-2 advantage. Bates scored once again to open the second quarter, but another tally from Allen made it a 10-3 game at 12:34. The home team answered again with three straight but junior attack Abby Pitts broke up the run with a tally at 2:57 to send the teams into halftime with a 13-4 lead in Bates' favor.

Out of the break, junior attack Jennifer Lins scored for the Corsairs, but the Bobcats sandwiched it with four goals for a 17-5 advantage. In the final frame, Allen scored on the man-up, while graduate student attack and captain Emma Terino netted her first of the game – to go along with two assists – to conclude the scoring for UMD.

Allen finished with three goals and two assists for five points with all six of her shots going on goal. She added three ground balls, three caused turnovers and two draw controls. Terino had a goal with two assists for three points, posting a game-high 10 draw controls, while Swenson, Lins and Pitts each had a goal.

In the net, sophomore Keira Bushey recorded seven saves in the opening half of action to shoulder the loss. Rookie netminder Irelynn Marshall played the second half of relief, making one save.
