Final Stats
PROVIDENCE, RI-Host Rhode Island College scored twice in each half and defeated the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team, 4-2, in the 2009 Little East Conference opener for both teams at the RIC Varsity Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon.
The4 Anchormen scored twice in the first 19:41 to take a 2-0 halftime lead on a pair of goals by Mike Diogo. Junior midfielder Jason Couto (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS (Bristol CC) took a pass from sophomore Ebenezer Vicente (Praia, Cape Verde/Massasoit CC) and fired home a shot from outside the box in the first minute of the second half to make it 2-1, but Kyle Estrela picked up a loose ball and scored in the 66th minute to make it 3-1. Couto countered with another blast in the 73rd minute to make it 3-2, but Bruno Costa converted a penalty kick in the 82nd minute to account for the final score.
The Anchormen out shot the Corsairs, 16-13. Freshmen Kellen Rauch (Ashland, MA/Ashland HS) and Mike Phelan (Carver, MA/Carver HS) combined to make five saves for UMD, while Andrew Hogan made two for RIC.
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 4-1 and 0-1 in the LEC with the defeat, while RIC improved to 1-4-1 and 1-0 in LEC play with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Lasell Tuesday.
