Final Stats
WESTFIELD, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team scored once in each period and went on to defeat host Westfield State, 3-1, in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference game at the Amelia Park Arena Thursday evening.
The Corsairs took a 1-0 lead in the first period. After UMass Dartmouth killed off a pair of penalties, senior forward Joe Hill (Newburyport, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) scored with the Corsairs holding a two-man advantage. Junior forward Rob Dudley (Douglas, MA/Middlesex School) and senior defenseman Mickey Dudley (Douglas, MA/Boston Jr. Bruins) assisted.
Jeff Callahan tied it for Westfield State with a second period shorthanded goal. UMass Dartmouth then got a power play goal from senior defenseman Adam Horgan (Clayton, NC/Jersey Hitmen) to regain the lead. Sophomore forward Dave McDonald (Wakefield, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) and sophomore defenseman Cullen Lundholm (Plymouth, MA/Robert Morris) assisted.
The Corsairs went up 3-1 at 10:24 of the third period, with sophomore forward Nick Marquis (Londonderry, NH/Valley Jr. Warriors) scoring after UMD won a face-off in the offensive zone. McDonald and sophomore forward Phil Bronner (Wilbraham, MA/ Springfield Jr. Falcons) assisted.
"It was a very good win on the road," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. "It feels good to win our first game. Now we've got a very good Plymouth State team coming in here Saturday."
The Corsairs out shot the Owls, 34-30, holding WSU to six shots in the third period. Senior goaltender Collin Tracy (Medford, MA/Medford HS) made 29 saves for UMD, while Ray Monroe made 31 stops for Westfield State.
The Corsairs improved to 3-0-0 and 1-0-0 in the MASCAC with the victory, while the Owls dropped to 1-3-1 and 1-1-0 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Plymouth State in a MASCAC game Saturday.
