NEWPORT, RI-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team scored two goals within eight minutes in the first half and won their fifth game in a row, holding off host Salve Regina, 2-1, in a non-conference opener for both teams at Brother Michael Reynolds Field Tuesday.
Sophomore forward Victor Ferreira (St. Michael, Portugal/New Bedford HS) scored one goal for the Corsairs and assisted on the other.
Ferreira assisted on a goal by freshman midfielder Ryland Foster-Gorbach (West Roxbury, MA/Catholic Memorial HS) 17:35 into the first half. Ferreira then scored at 25:31 of the first half, assisted by freshman forward Elton Borges (Praia, Cape Verde, Burke HS)
Sean McAllister scored for the Seahawks at the 82:47 mark, but the Corsairs held off SRU the rest of the way.
"We played really well in the first half, and we had a lot of opportunities," said UMass Dartmouth Assistant Coach Alex Bettencourt. "We came out playing good soccer, and we were ahead for a good part of the match. Salve worked hard to get their goal, but we were able to get the win."
UMass Dartmouth out shot Salve Regina, 16-14. Junior goalkeeper Mike Phelan (Carver, MA/Carver HS) Phelan made four saves for UMD, while Kyle Kreczka made four for SRU.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 5-1 with the victory, while Salve Regina dropped to 4-2-1 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Western Connecticut State Friday evening.
