NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Junior forward Graham Christensen (Darien, CT/Darien HS) scored three minutes and 35 seconds into overtime to give visiting Connecticut College a 2-1 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team in a non-conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Tuesday.
Christensen took a pass from senior defender Mike Crosby (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury HS) off an indirect free kick and scored to give the Camels the victory.
UMass Dartmouth had taken a 1-0 lead when freshman forward Nick Gontijo (Hudson, MA/Hudson HS) scored, firing home the rebound of a shot by freshman forward Elton Borges (Praia, Cape Verde, Burke HS) in the 55th minute.
Senior midfielder Oscar Brown (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield HS) tied the game for the Camels in the 71st minute, converting a penalty kick after the Corsairs were called for a foul in the box.
"We played well in the first half," said UMass Dartmouth Assistant Coach Alex Bettencourt. "Connecticut College is a well-coached and well-disciplined team that is tactically very sound. They made a great play in overtime. (Junior goalkeeper) Mike Phelan (Carver, MA/Carver HS) played well and kept us in the match. It was a good effort, now we have to focus on getting better."
UMass Dartmouth out shot Connecticut College, 15-12. Junior goalkeeper Mike Phelan(Carver, MA/Carver HS) made six saves for UMD, while sophomore goalkeeper Max Nichols (Tamalpais, CA/Mill Valley HS) made four for CC.
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 5-2-1 with the defeat, while Connecticut College improved to 4-2 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Rhode Island College Saturday. The Camels will host Bowdoin Saturday.
