SALEM, MA -Host Salem State broke a scoreless tie with a pair of second period goals and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team, 3-1, in a Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference game at the Rockett Arena Tuesday evening.

Ian Flanagan took advantage of a line change to break in alone and score at 12;47 of the second period, then Eric Defelice scored at 17:53 to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead.

Giancarlo Capodanno made it 3-0 with a power play goal at 10:44 of the third period. Senior forward Mike Owens (South Boston, MA/Boston Jr. Bulldogs) put UMD on the board when he scored a power play goal at 16:54 of the third period. Senior forward Rob Dudley (Douglas, MA/Middlesex School) and junior forward Nick Marquis (Londonderry, NH/Valley Jr. Warriors-EJHL) assisted.

"It was scoreless after the first period, then Salem took advantage of a miscue on a long change from the bench and they scored on a breakaway," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. "They scored again in the second period and again in the third period before we got a power play goal from Mike Owens. Salem State was a little quicker to the puck than we were, especially in the second period, and that was the difference in the game."

The Vikings outshot the Corsairs, 30-28. UMD junior goaltender Ryan Williams (Milton, ON/Huntsville Otters-OPJHL) and Salem State's Ryan Sutliffe each made 27 saves. UMD converted one of two power plays to SSU's one of four.

UMass Dartmouth dropped to 9-4-1 and 5-2-1 in the MASCAC with the defeat, while Salem State improved to 8-5-1 and 5-2-1 with the victory. UMD will return to action when they visit Westfield State Thursday evening.
