Box Score NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA –The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team and host Fitchburg State exchanged second period goals, and the teams finished in a 1-1 tie in their Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference game at the Wallace Civic Center Saturday.
UMass Dartmouth struck first, scoring when sophomore forward Dmitry Antipin (Novosibirsk, Russia/Cape Cod Cubs-EJHL) scored on his own rebound at 5:10 of the second period. John Celli tied the score for the Falcons at 12:30 of the second period, converting a pass from Derek Giansanti just two seconds after a FSU power play ended.
Each team took four minor penalties, and neither scored a power play goal.
"We struggled to score, as we have throughout the season," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. "We battled hard, played a back and forth, up and down game, and (senior) Ryan Williams (Milton, ON/Huntsville Otters-OPJHL) was stellar in goal. (Senior defenseman) Zach Hepler (Sarver, PA/Dixie Beehives-OPHL) and (sophomore defenseman) Steve Ginand (Milford, MA/Northern Cyclones-AtJHL) were outstanding on defense. Fitchburg probably had more grade A scoring chances than we did, and we were probably fortunate to get out of here with a tie."
The Falcons outshot the Corsairs, 40-34. Williams made 39 saves for UMD, while Randy Wolcott made 33 saves for FSU.
UMass Dartmouth is now 6-5-4 and 5-2-3 in the MASCAC, while Fitchburg State is 6-8-2 and 5-4-1 in MASCAC play. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Plymouth State Thursday evening. The Falcons will visit Westfield State next Thursday.
