Baseball Splits Twinbill at Roger Williams

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BRISTOL, RI-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team split their non-conference doubleheader against host Roger Williams at Paolino Field Thursday. The Corsairs won the opener, 8-2, and the Hawks took the nightcap, 4-2.

UMass Dartmouth took command early in the first game, scoring three runs in the top of the third and adding five more in the fourth. Sophomore third baseman George Aggostini (Dighton, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS/Marist) put UMD on top with an RBI single, and senior catcher Matt Worden (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) made it 3-0 with another single. In the fifth, sophomore center fielder Ryan Medeiros (Acushnet, MA/New Bedford HS/Eckerd) had a sacrifice fly, freshman right fielder Connor Shaw (Goffstown, NH/Goffstown HS) and sophomore designated hitter Alex Newton (Saco, ME/Thornton Academy/Franklin Pierce) each had RBI singles, and sophomore left fielder Luke Bomback (Swansea, MA/Case HS) and senior first baseman Tyler White (Westport, MA/Westport HS/Massasoit CC) each knocked in a run with an infield grounder. Freshman right-hander George Bent (Barnstable, MA/Barnstable HS/UMass) pitched the first six innings for the win, improving to 1-1. Dan Julian started for the Hawks and took the loss, falling to 2-3.

The Corsairs took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the nightcap, getting RBI singles from Aggostini and Newton. RWU tied it in the fourth on a run-scoring triple by catcher Joe Hock and an infield out by third baseman Mike Thomas. Thomas broke the tie with an RBI single in the fifth, and another run crossed on a wild pitch in the sixth. Josh Orosz went five innings for the win, improving to 4-2, while Tyler Pogmore finished and earned his sixth save. Freshman Joshua Tombs (Kingstown, RI/South Kingstown HS) started and took the loss for UMD, falling to 1-3.

"I thought we pitched well in both games," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Prince. "George Bent threw the ball well in game one, we swung the bats well, and we made the plays. In game two, Josh Tombs threw well, but they executed a little better than we did. I wasn't unhappy with how we played; I thought they were just a little bit better."

The Corsairs are now 12-19, while the Hawks are now 21-16.  UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Eastern Connecticut State in a doubleheader Saturday. RWU will visit Nichols Saturday.
