Corsairs Overcome Monks To Salvage Split

GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth volleyball team closed its regular season with a 3-2 victory over Saint Joseph's College (Maine) this afternoon at the Hill Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Southern Maine. 

The Corsairs (11-18) erased a 2-1 deficit to outlast the Monks in five sets (26-24, 21-25, 9-25, 25-20, and 15-10), snapping UMass Dartmouth's six-match losing streak.

UMass Dartmouth utilized a well-balanced attack against Saint Joseph's as 10 student-athletes recorded at least one kill.  Junior Jasmine Burris (New Bedford, Mass.) led the offense with eight kills and three errors on 25 swings.  Classmate Shannon Orton (Swansea, Mass.) posted six winners, while sophomore Cara Butcher (East Longmeadow, Mass.) put down five kills.  Sophomore Christina Spinazola (Medway, Mass.) handed out 15 assists, while senior Caitlin Bien (Millbury, Mass.) dished out 11 helpers in her final match in a Corsair uniform.  Junior Brianna Perry (Acushnet, Mass.) anchored the backline with 22 digs.

In the opening contest of the tri-match, the host Huskies swept the Corsairs in straight sets (25-12, 25-14, 25-20) to earn their first Little East Conference win of the campaign, while UMass Dartmouth dropped to 0-7 in the conference circuit.
