Box Score FITCHBURG, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's ice hockey team utilized a four-goal, third period to capture a, 6-4, come-from-behind road win against Fitchburg State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) matchup on Saturday evening.
Trailing by two scores (4-2) early in the third period, senior Shaun Walters (Plymouth, Mich.) found the back of the net for the second time in the game to cut the deficit down to one. Nearly ten minutes later during a power-play, junior Garrett Allen (Dartmouth, Mass.) put home the equalizer off a feed from teammate Kevin Choi (Gardena, Calif.). With the momentum now on the Corsair's side, junior Mike Restuccia (Malden, Mass.) found freshman Shayne Bailey (Quincy, Mass.) for the go-ahead strike with three minutes, 47 seconds left in regulation. In the final seconds, freshman Jaret Babych (North Vancouver, B.C.) fired his second score of the game into an empty net to solidify the win and halt a four-game skid for the Corsairs.
Prior to the final stanza, Walter notched a man-up goal in the first period and Babych opened the second period with a strike of his own to bring UMass Dartmouth (2-7-2, 2-2-2 MASCAC) within reach, 3-2.
Fitchburg State (3-6-2, 2-3-1 MASCAC) scored early and often in the opening period. Junior Ryan Connolly recorded the first goal of the game, only four minutes and 33 seconds into the contest. At the eight minute, seven second mark, Connolly found himself on the distributing side of the puck this time around. The forward setup teammate Cameron Snyder, who also registered a goal in the second stanza, to give the Falcons a two score lead. Not even two minutes later, sophomore Mike Fish piled on another score, giving the host team a three goal command.
The Corsairs and Fitchburg State went 50 percent on power-play opportunities, while UMass Dartmouth held an advantage at the dot (47-35) and in shots (38-32).
In goal, sophomore JJ Solloway (Derry, N.H.) made 28 saves to earn his second win of the season for the Corsairs. On the other side, Falcon Ryan Wysocki turned away 32 attempts in the effort.
UMass Dartmouth returns to action at 7:10 pm on Wednesday, Jan. 7, when the Corsairs travel to Johnson & Wales.
