Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth baseball team pounded out a season-high 20 hits as the Corsairs edged Babson College 11-9 in 10 innings this afternoon at Govoni Field.
With its fourth win in the past five games, UMass Dartmouth evened its record at 12-12, while Beavers dipped to 12-13.
Junior Alberto Vasquez (Roxbury, Mass./O'Bryant) laced a two-out, two-run double in the top of the 10th inning to provide the visitors with the decisive runs.
Vasquez led the offensive attack with a 5-for-6 performance at the plate. Vasquez recorded four extra base hits, on three doubles and a home run, while scoring three runs and driving in a season-high four. Junior George Agostini (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) had three hits, including a double, while five other Corsairs' registered multiple hits. Junior Alex Newton (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) homered and drove in three runs.
Babson first-year Kevin Murphy (Pembroke, Mass.) had three hits, including a double, while scoring twice and driving in a pair of runs for the Beavers. Senior Sean Lanahan (Avon, Conn.) had a three-hit day, first-year Joe Barry (Stoneham, Mass.) had two doubles, and classmate Jack Halpin (Glastonbury, Conn.) homered as part of a two-hit day in the loss.
UMass Dartmouth took a 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI-groundout by Newton, and then added to it with three more runs in the fourth. Vasquez drilled a two-run homer to right and first-year Evan Eldridge (Danvers, Mass.) followed a two-out triple by junior Ryan Medeiros (Acushnet, Mass.) with an RBI single up the middle to make it a 4-0 game.
Barry plated junior Sean MacPhee (Framingham, Mass.) with a two-out double to left in the bottom of the fourth, and Newton and Halpin traded leadoff home runs in the sixth before the Green and White tied the game with a three-run seventh inning. Junior Dillon Gonzlez (Beverly, Mass.) lined a two-run homer over the right centerfield fence to cut the deficit to one and first-year Owen Shea (Northborough, Mass.), who singled and later moved to third on a single by Halpin, raced home on a wild pitch to tie the game at 5-5
UMass Dartmouth wasted little time in retaking the lead with three runs in the top of the eighth. Junior Ben Monteiro (Swansea, Mass.) and Eldridge hit back-to-back RBI singles, and Medeiros came through with a two-out bloop single down the left field line to bring home Monteiro for an 8-5 advantage. The cushion did not last long though, as Babson led off the bottom of the frame with five consecutive hits, scoring four runs to take its first lead of the day.
Lanahan followed singles by senior Brendan Collins (Abington, Mass.) and sophomore George Crowley (Watertown, Mass.) with an RBI knock to right to make it 8-6. Murphy then tied the game, drilling a two-run double to right center, and later came around with the go-ahead run when Corsairs' catcher Cory DeMedeiros (Fall River, Mass.) attempted pick-off throw sailed into center field.
UMass Dartmouth opened the top of the ninth with three consecutive singles before a sacrifice fly from Newton scored Agostini to deadlock the game at 9-9, forcing extra innings.
Babson senior Michael Bortolotti (Milton, Mass.), who came on in relief of junior Nick Malatos (Milton, Mass.), recorded two quick outs in the 10th, but sophomore Joe Zottoli (Holden, Mass.) smacked a double to right center and Agostini walked to set up Vasquez's heroics.
First-year Ted Savage (Plymouth, Mass.) worked a perfect ninth inning to earn his first career win, and Monteiro, who started in right field, retired the side in order in the 10th to earn his second save of the year. Starting pitcher, sophomore Matt Russell (Townsend, Mass.) allowed four runs, all earned, and 10 hits while striking out five in 6 1/3 innings.
Malatos went seven innings for the Beavers giving up seven runs on 12 hits to go along with four strikeouts. Bortolotti allowed four runs on eight hits over three innings to drop to 0-3 on the season.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action tomorrow at 3:30 p.m., when the Corsairs host Rhode Island College in a Little East Conference contest.
