Corsairs Take Two from Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. – Junior George Agostini (Rehoboth, Mass.) went a combined 4-for-7 with two runs and two RBI to guide the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth baseball team to a pair of seven inning non-conference wins against Roger Williams University on Thursday afternoon at Paolino Field, 4-0 and 4-1.

UMass Dartmouth moves above .500 on the year and increases its overall season record to 17-16, while Roger Williams descends to 21-14.

In the second, the Corsairs posted the first run on the scoreboard when junior Nate Farias (Fall River, Mass.) crossed home plate on a throwing error by the Hawks. Junior Alex Newton (Saco, Maine) recorded a pair of RBI singles to left field in the fifth and seventh innings to give UMass Dartmouth a 3-0 lead. Later in the seventh, junior Alberto Vasquez (Roxbury, Mass.) scored the fourth and final run of the game when he touched home on a grounder to first base.

On the hill for the Corsairs, senior Wayne Bolz (Billerica, Mass.) hurled six innings of shutout baseball to earn his first win of the season.

Junior Ryan Medeiros (Acushnet, Mass.), Agostini and Newton all went 2-for-4 at the plate in the win.

Caulin Rogers put the host team on the scoreboard in the third with an RBI single up the middle. The Corsairs followed with a pair of runs in the following two innings.

In the fourth, Newton generated a sacrifice fly to left field to score Agostini and Cory DeMedeiros (Fall River, Mass.) came around to score on a ground out to second base a few batters later.  With runners on second and third, Agostini knocked in two runs with a single to right field to give the Corsairs a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning.

The Corsairs used a combination of five arms to hold the Hawks to one run and five hits.  Freshman Tucker Bouchard (Kingston, Mass.) earned his first collegiate win, while sophomore Matt Russell (Townsend, Mass.) collected his second save of the year.

UMass Dartmouth returns to the field for a conference double-header on Saturday, April 26, when the Corsairs host Eastern Connecticut State at noon and 3 p.m.
