Box Score DARTMOUTH, Mass. – University of Massachusetts Dartmouth junior Akere Tambi (Bamenda, Cameroon) registered a season-high five points, on two goals and an assist, to power the Corsairs to a 4-0 victory over visiting University of Southern Maine Saturday afternoon in a Little East Conference men's soccer match on Cressy Field.
UMass Dartmouth won for the second consecutive match to improve to 6-4-1, and earned its first conference victory of 2015 (1-2-1). The Huskies fell to 1-9-1 and remain winless (0-4) against Little East opponents.
The Corsairs controlled the pace throughout the match, holding a 23-6 advantage in shots. UMass Dartmouth cracked the scoring column in the 27th minute, when junior Stephan Teixeira (Brockton, Mass.) converted a penalty kick for his team-leading fifth goal of the season. The Corsairs registered 11 of the 13 attempts in the opening 45 minutes, but entered the intermission with just a one-goal lead.
UMass Dartmouth almost doubled its advantage in the 80th minute, when Teixeira ran onto a through ball behind the Huskies' defensive line. Teixeira tried to beat the keeper into the lower right corner, but it bounced off the post.
The Corsairs broke open the contest with three goals in the span of four minutes, 40 seconds to seal the victory. Tambi netted a pair of markers less than three minutes apart, while junior Wilfred Ghanyea (Monrovia, Liberia) finished a feed from Tambi and senior Corey Morris.
Junior Andre Reis (Fall River, Mass.) recorded two saves to earn his second shutout of the season. Southern Maine freshman Simon Hulbert (Bar Harbor, Maine) played all 90 minutes in net and made seven stops.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13, when the Corsairs travel to Roger Williams.
