Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – University of Massachusetts Dartmouth junior Stephan Teixeira (Brockton, Mass.) converted a penalty kick in the 27th minute and the Corsairs held an 8-3 advantage in shots in the second half, but Roger Williams was able to hold on for the 2-1 victory Tuesday night in a NCAA Division III men's soccer match.
UMass Dartmouth dropped its first decision in three matches to slip to 6-5-1, while the Hawks improved to 5-7-1.
Roger Williams jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the opening 22 minutes of regulation. Dan Kelly cracked the scoring column in the 12th minute, registering an unassisted marker. Ten minutes later, Cole Owens headed in the eventual game-winner off assists from Kurt Isleib and Kelly.
The Corsairs whittled their deficit to one in the 27th minute, when the Hawks were whistled for an infraction inside their own 18-yard box. Teixeira calmly stepped up to the ball and converted his second straight penalty kick and sixth goal of the season.
UMass Dartmouth controlled the pace in the second half, recording eight of the 11 attempts. However, the Corsairs were unable to solve the hosts' goalkeeping tandem of Ryan Fowler (1 save) and Carsten Freidrickson (1 save).
Junior Andre Reis (Fall River, Mass.) played all 90 minutes in net for the visitors, registering six saves. Nick Nelson earned the start for Roger Williams and made one save before exiting in the 41st minute.
The Corsairs were awarded eight of the nine corner kick opportunities, including a 2-1 edge over the final 45 minutes.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action at 1 p.m. on Oct. 17, when the Corsairs travel to Keene State College (4-7, 1-3 LEC).
