Lancers Outpoint Corsairs In Extra Innings; Spoil Senior Night

Box Score

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. – Senior Cory DeMedeiros (Fall River, Mass.) homerd twice, but Worcester State University snapped a 9-all tie in the top of the 10th inning to edge the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 11-9, this evening in a NCAA Division III baseball contest at Paul Walsh Field.

Tonight marked the third meeting between the two clubs this season with the Lancers (23-14) earning their first win of the series. UMass Dartmouth opened the campaign with an 8-3 victory, while also registering a 9-2 win on April 2 in Worcester, Mass.

Prior to the start of the contest, UMass Dartmouth (19-14) celebrated Senior Night, recognizing seven members of the Class of 2015. The Class of 2015 accounted for 13 of the Corsairs' 16 hits, led by DeMedeiros. DeMedeiros went 3-for-5 with two home runs, a double, three runs scored and four RBI. Classmates Alex Newton (Saco, Maine) and Alberto Vasquez (Roxbury, Mass.) also pounded out three hits, while senior Ryan Medeiros (Acushnet, Mass.) homered to right field to lead off the bottom of the first inning.

Junior David Tarr (Easton, Mass.) was saddled with the loss (3-2), allowing two runs on two hits, while striking out three in two innings. Tarr was summoned from the bullpen after freshman Benjamin Lodge (Blackstone, Mass.) was unable to retire the only two batters he faced in the ninth.

Freshman Ryan Britton (Milford, N.H.) made his first collegiate start and seventh appearance of the season, registering a no-decision.  The rookie left-hander gave up eight runs, three of which were earned, on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings, while striking out a batter.  Junior Paul Mahoney (North Andover, Mass.) allowed just one hit over the next 1 2/3 innings before classmate Matt Russell (Townsend, Mass.) tossed two scoreless innings of relief to depart with the 9-8 lead.

UMass Dartmouth will return to action at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, when the Corsairs travel to Brandeis University. Earlier this season, the Corsairs defeated the Judges 9-4 in Waltham, Mass.
