Box Score NEWPORT, R.I. – Salve Regina University scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back to post a 7-0 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth this afternoon in a NCAA Division III baseball game at Reynolds Field.
The Corsairs (10-6) saw their season-high five-game winning streak come to an end, while the Seahawks raised their overall record to 10-7 with their fifth consecutive victory.
The middle of the UMass Dartmouth lineup combined for all six hits, led by seniors Nate Farias (Fall River, Mass.) and Alex Newton (Saco, Maine). Farias was 2-for-4 with a double, while Newton registered a pair of singles. Senior Ben Monteiro (Swansea, Mass.) laced a double, while freshman Ervin Kantardzic (Roslindale, Mass.) reached safely in his pinch-hit opportunity.
Junior Aaron Chouinard (Swansea, Mass.) suffered the loss, surrendering seven runs on nine hits. The left-hander recorded a season-high eight strikeouts, while issuing one walk. Classmate Matt Russell (Townsend, Mass.) and freshman Matt Cronin (Framingham, Masss.) threw an inning of scoreless relief.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, when the Corsairs face Little East Conference foe Plymouth State University in a conference doubleheader at Tufts University.
