Box Score DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team pushed visiting Bridgewater State University to a decisive fifth set, but the Corsairs were unable to complete the comeback this evening at the Tripp Athletic Center.
The Bears posted a 21-25, 25-18, 25-17, 24-26, 15-11 victory to snap a five-match losing streak and improve to 2-9 on the season. The Corsairs lost for the third time in their past five matches to fall to 4-7. UMass Dartmouth has lost each of its three contests that were pushed to a decisive fifth set.
Bridgewater State Ciara Goncalves (Dennis, Mass.) powered the visitors' attack with a match-high 19 kills. Junior Hannah Maymon (Narragansett, R.I.) also reached double figures with 12 winners, while Charleyne Panner (Gilford, N.H.) posted a double-double with 45 assists and 14 digs. Freshman Cassidy Tyros (Chelmsford, Mass.) recorded a team-best 17 digs.
Senior Eliza Bowes (West Yarmouth, Mass.) registered eight kills, eight service aces, and 10 digs to lead the Corsairs. Classmate Kayla Kirby (Westport, Mass.) fired home nine winners, while junior Christina Spinazola (Medway, Mass.) handed out 36 assists. Senior Brianna Perry (Acushnet, Mass.) tallied a game-high 20 digs.
Trailing 2-1 and late in the fourth set, UMass Dartmouth scored 10 of the final 14 points to force the fifth and final frame. The Corsairs won four consecutive points on senior Meghan Curro's (Dalton, Mass.) serve to forge a 21-all tie. The Bears were one point shy of sealing the victory, but UMass Dartmouth registered the final three points to extend the match.
The Corsairs were unable to sustain their momentum in the fifth set, as Bridgewater State scored the opening five points and never looked back.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action at noon on Saturday, Sept. 19, when the Corsairs host the University of Southern Maine in their Little East Conference opener.
