Box Score DARTMOUTH, Mass. – University of Massachusetts Dartmouth junior Stephan Teixeira (Brockton, Mass.) scored a season-high five points to power the Corsairs to a 3-0 victory over Salem State University Tuesday evening in a NCAA Division III men's soccer match on Cressy Field.
The Corsairs have earned at least a point in five of their six matches to improve to 4-1-1, the program's best start since 2012. The Vikings remained winless on the campaign, sinking to 0-6.
Teixeira led the UMass Dartmouth offensive attack, accounting for two goals and an assist in the opening 45 minutes of action. Junior Derik Medeiros (Fall River, Mass.) produced the third and final marker, his first of the season, with seven seconds remaining in the half.
The Corsairs cracked the scoring column in the 28th minute, generating their initial scoring opportunity off a corner kick. Junior Matt Vidal (New Bedford, Mass.) inserted the ball into the 18-yard box from the right flag, where Teixeira headed the pass just inside the far, left post.
Four minutes later, Teixeira pressured a Salem State defender and forced the turnover. The Brockton, Mass. native broke in uncontested and slipped his fourth goal of the season into the back of the net.
UMass Dartmouth looked like it was going to take a 2-0 advantage into the halftime locker room, but Teixeira stole a clearing pass along the left flank. The Corsairs made a quick transition up field as Teixeira found Medeiros cutting against the grain. Medeiros stuck a lower shot that beat the Vikings' keeper for his first marker of the campaign.
Junior Andre Reis (Fall River, Mass.) stopped all seven shots he faced to earn the shutout victory, raising his individual record to 2-1.
Salem State had its best scoring chance in the 68th minute, when junior Ralph Bertrand (Rowley, Mass.) headed an attempt on net after a free kick. Sophomore Luke Moylan (West Boylston, Mass.) gathered the rebound, but his attempt sailed wide left.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action at 12 noon on Saturday, Sept. 26, when the Corsairs travel to Little East Conference rival Rhode Island College (3-4, 0-1).
