Corsairs Drop Tri-Match With Western Connecticut, Tufts

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth volleyball team faced its toughest test to date on Saturday afternoon, hosting 2014 NCAA Division III tournament participants Western Connecticut State University and Tufts University inside the Tripp Athletic Center.

The Corsairs (7-9, 1-1 LEC) had their three-match winning streak snapped by the Colonials in the opener, falling 25-19, 25-10, and 25-16. The Jumbos (6-3) won the nightcap in straight sets by the scores of 25-15, 25-20, and 25-16.

In the first match, freshman Olivia Wallett (Willington, Conn.) registered a team-high six kills on 17 attacks to lead UMass Dartmouth. Senior Jasmine Burris (New Bedford, Mass.) produced a balanced match with five kills, two service aces and six digs. Classmate Brianna Perry (Acushnet, Mass.) posted a team-high 12 digs.

Western Connecticut junior Karissa Smith (Bristol, Conn.) registered 10 kills and two solo blocks to pace the visitors. Junior Danielle Kaminsky (Southington, Conn.) organized the Colonials attack with a match-high 25 assists, while sophomore Brittany Steele (Massapequa, N.Y.) contributed on both sides of the net with nine winners and 13 digs.

In the nightcap, junior Megan Ronaghan (North Attleboro, Mass.) delivered seven kills, while collecting an assist and three digs to lead the Corsairs. Junior Christina Spinazola (Medway, Mass.) handed out 10 assists and compiled two kills and four service aces, while Perry logged another 12 digs.

First-year Katie Zheng (Omaha, Neb.) orchestrated Tufts' attack with a career-high 25 assists. Zheng's favorite target was first-year Alexandra Wood, who established a new career-high of seven kills. Senior libero Carolina Berger (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) compiled 12 digs along the back line.

UMass Dartmouth will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 29, when the Corsairs travel to Lasell College (5-12).
