NEW BEDFORD, Mass. – Four different Corsairs scored on Saturday afternoon at Hetland Arena, as UMass Dartmouth ice hockey claimed a MASCAC victory over Westfield State, 4-2.

With the win, UMass improves to 5-6-3 and 4-3-2 in conference play. Westfield drops to 9-7-0 and 4-5-0 within the MASCAC.

Corsair netminder Drew Michals (Newton, Mass.) turned out yet another noteworthy performance in goal, stopping 45 shots in 60 minutes of ice time in the win. UMass Dartmouth is now 5-0-2 on the season when scoring three or more times.

Sophomore Casey Shea (Woburn, Mass.) started the scoring in the first period when he received a breakout pass from senior Billy Boudreau (Newburport, Mass.), faking out Owl goalie Jonathan LoParco (Vaughan, Ontario) to find the back the net. With the goal, Shea continues his hot streak, registering at least one point in the past three games (five goals, one assist).

The Owls would answer back less than a minute later, when sophomore Roman Pfennings (Grefrath, Germany) took a rebound from the front of the net and flipped it past Michals. Senior Kyllian Kirkwood (Copper Cliff, Ont.) and freshman Carl Greco (Niagara Falls, Ont.) were credited with the assists.

The Corsairs broke the tie with the only goal in the second period, when senior Garrett Allen (Dartmouth, Mass.) found the back of the net, receiving the pass from sophomore Jerry Laakso (Tampere, Finland) and junior Matt Baldino (Woburn, Mass.).

Sophomore Mike Sones (Waterdown, Ontario) scored the eventual game winner, converting on his sixth power play goal of the season. With that total, Sones now sits tied for second in power play scores in the nation.

A little over a minute later, sophomore Kyle Zacharewicz (Ludlow, Mass.) redirected a Mike Grassi (Reading, Mass.)shot past LoParco to increase the lead to three.

Freshman Colby Daniels (Leask, Sask.) cut the Corsairs lead in half with two minutes left, but despite pulling LoParco for a minute and a half, the Owls couldn't close the gap.

UMD scored once on five opportunities while on the man advantage, while Westfield State went 0-2. The visitors outshot the hosts on the contest, registering 47 shots to the Corsairs' 39.
